ENERGYSTAR® is fast becoming the new standard in new home construction. Although it is a voluntary program with Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Office of Energy Efficiency it has become internationally recognized for its ability to help consumers benchmark energy efficient residential construction.

This year alone, nearly 5,000 homes will be tested and certified in Ontario.

Improvements in windows, insulation, heating and air conditioning and air tightness are used to increase the home’s performance. Once complete, each home is evaluated, inspected and certified by an independent tester to ensure the home meet’s the strict requirements set by the program. Homes are assigned a value or number which designates its efficiency rating which translates into energy savings.

What does this mean?
  • Save money on utility bills. ENERGYSTAR homes are 30-40% more efficient than homes built to the Ontario Building Code alone and offer significant savings each month on utility bills, especially when you consider the true cost of a home is not its ‘sticker price’ but what it costs to own and operate it every month.

  • Save money on your mortgage. CHMC offers a 10% reduction in mortgage insurance premium.
  • Solid construction. ENERGYSTAR homes are more tightly constructed and contain high efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment, more insulation, tighter ducts, and energy-efficient windows
  • Comfort and Quiet. Tighter construction and improved insulation help keep out excess heat, cold and noise.
  • Healthier Indoor Air. ENERGYSTAR homes have better sealed ducts which help keep out dust, pollen, mold and carbon monoxide out so you can breath easier.
  • Good for the Environment. Today, 17 percent of the energy consumed in Canada is used to run our homes. Every time we use energy from fossil fuels such as oil and gas, we produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to climate change. An ENERGYSTAR qualified new home reduces GHG emissions by approximately three tones per year.
