ACCESSIBILITY - Building for Life
An accessible home is the ability for all occupants and guests to move about freely with ease and comfort. Many existing homes are not equipped, nor can they be easily or cost effectively modified, for those with limited or unique abilities.
The issue of accessibility has never been more relevant than now. More and more clients are asking how they can incorporate a wide range of features including low/no threshold entries, grab bars, roll-in showers, modified cabinetry, ramps, switches, lifts and lighting. Our changing demographics continue to supporting the need for homes that are designed and constructed for flexible living. People are living longer, staying in their homes longer, living with more complex medical needs and supporting their aging relatives at home.
Consider these facts:
- Approximately 1.85 million people in Ontario have a disability (Source: Statistics Canada, December 2008) This represents approximately 15.5% of Ontario’s population
- With our aging population, these rates are expected to climb higher. At present 47% of Ontario’s seniors (age 65+) live with a disability.

For those who are unsure whether they should REMODEL or CONSTRUCT NEW, research has shown that building for accessibility is more cost effective than re-modeling. For example, some of the benefits of BUILDING ACCESSIBLE include:
- No demolition/Shoring Up Expenses – the cost of DEstruction (taking apart and removing what you longer want) must be added to the cost of CONstruction (building in the new features)
